Avani Windhoek Hotel and Casino: Urban Stay in Namibia

No matter which direction you are coming from, the Avani Windhoek will be a welcome respite from the harsh yet beautiful landscapes that surround it. If you are a traveller, driving here from the desert, the Avani will provide you with the comfort and relief you need to recharge and get ready for your next journey. If you are here for business, it is central, there is plenty of coffee and working spots to get done what you need.

Where is the Avani Windhoek Located

It is situated right in the middle of town, so you will not be short on things to do if you have the time. Here is a list of just a few things that are walking distance away from the Avani:

  • Heroes Acre
  • Independence Memorial Museum
  • Namibia Craft Centre
  • Xwama African Restaurant

The hotel is also located right on top of a central mall, so it is well known and you can access dozens of shops while you stay here. There is a shop for everything, even a great souvenir place near Pantry, the coffee shop in reception. If you are a fan of Biltong (a popular meat snack), the mall has a specialty shop you MUST try.

Dining at Avani Windhoek

You will not even have to leave the hotel and you still get some of the best food in Namibia. The highlight of the hotel is the Stratos Bar & Restaurant, located on the rooftop of the hotel. It is located on the 14th floor, also the tallest floor of all Windhoek. Up there is a great place to watch the sun go down over a few sundowners and relax. The staff there were super helpful and helped us order when we were undecided which of the tasty treats we were going to have. Dunes Restaurant is the international buffet on the first floor with live cooking stations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Pantry is located in the reception area and is the home to plenty of coffee and comfy spots to sit for coffee meetings. They do a great latte and is the perfect place to people watch or get some work is done, which I surely did for a couple of hours.

Facilities at Avani

There is also a casino located on the first floor, to the happiness of the gamblers or people that like to have some little fun. We are not huge gamblers so we did not go and check it out, but it is great to know that a hotel we have stayed in has its very own casino. Like in many of the Avani properties, they have an Avani Fit fitness centre. The room has everything you needed for a workout, from light free weights, treadmills, bikes, rowers and weighted machines. It is not quite Gold’s gym but has everything you need for a holiday/business trip workout. Even in the rooms, they had a booklet on how to stay fit within your hotel room and encourage you to stretch. If you are feeling like getting wet, there is a very small swimming pool located on the roof but it is not commonly used for swimming, more for an aesthetic appeal as the sun goes down.

Rooms at the Avani Hotel and Casino Windhoek

173 rooms available, we had a view of the whole city as the sun was setting. The rooms are a bit dated but was clean and is spacious for 2 adults. It was actually spacious enough to actually fit 2 more children in the room as well. We had everything you would come to expect from an Avani property, from a comfortable bed, fridge, fast wifi, nice staff, and nice, hot water, much needed after days of bush camping.

Sustainability at Avani

Like all Avani properties, they are making an effort to be involved in more sustainable practices. All our linen was optionally changed which is great, however, they were still using plastic bottles in all the rooms. On a positive note, they were using biodegradable straws which is a great leap forward in the hotel industry.

Our experience at the Avani Windhoek

An experience we had was the city tour which was arranged by the hotel. We only had two hours, in which our driver and guide showed us local and edgy parts of the city. We found some cultural spots, saw how the locals live in certain areas and finished off with some very interesting history of Namibia by visiting the church and the museum. It was great to get a guide to tell us what happened and how it shaped Namibia to be the incredible country it is today.
Even for the start of the hotel stay, as we drove in, the security team helped us park our car and we knew we were going to have a positive experience. The staff made our life easy by making every decision simple for us and were more than willing to share their local knowledge by answering hundreds of questions. The Avani Windhoek was a perfect stopover for a pair of weary travellers. With its comfort, great staff and ultra fast wifi, it was a perfect few days.
