How to stay fit while travelling

AdventureFaktory guide to stay fit while travelling

Do you travel for work? Are you in your year gap travelling the world? Are you an avid vacationeer? Staying fit could be one of your problems and we sure have been through that phase!

Becoming fit or staying fit is always easy when you have a home and a routine. We know how it is hard to maintain a healthier lifestyle on the road, hence why we have made this list of tips and tricks for you to follow in order to stay fit while travelling!

Walking is your best friend

If you can, avoid taxis or Ubers. Just put your walking shoes on and discover the city! There’s no better way to explore a city than on foot right? Remember those moments you were sitting in the cab and saw that nice “instagrammable” graffiti wall pass by? Well you should’ve walked, haha!

We also love to compete with ourselves by comparing steps we do everyday with our Fitbits. This is another way to keep you motivated to walk.

Make good use of your hotels’ gym

We usually have the gym aspect as one of our important points when booking a hotel. We usually get really disappointed when a hotel doesn’t have a gym and end up finding a gym somewhere to train. Tip: many gyms have one time trials, so just go for it!

Make time

It is as easy as a 15-20 minute workout. 15 minutes is 1% of your whole day, so how much is your health to you? Not having a gym should not be an excuse, you can always use your bodyweight to exercise.

A quick little set can be with 3 sets of 25 jump squats, 3 sets of 10 full burpees, 3 sets of 20 Sit ups, 3 sets of 15 jump lunges.  Go creative, alternate, it’s not too hard! We will give you a list of workouts you can do while travelling every upcoming 2 weeks!

Run around the city

If you have space and packed a good pair of runners, go for runs. When I am in New York, I love to go for runs although I hate running, but hey… cities like New York will make you love running!

When I was staying at the Double Tree in Time Square, I would go for a 5am run up to Central Park and back, a good 4km run depending which path you take back. It made me feel awesome and feel like I was a local New Yorker. It was great to see the city turn off its lights and kicking off the day.

Eat well

We know how it is tempting to eat tons of delicious food at the best restaurant of the town you are visiting or go for crazy Sunday or Friday brunches, but the key is control. If eating cheaper is your problem and you go for junk food, reconsider your food budget to slightly higher so you can better quality food. We also tend to forget our greens when we travel so make sure to order those green sides! Another way of doing it is intermittent fasting. Read more about it to understand how to go for it.

Prioritize your health while packing

If you know you are going to a destination without a gym, pack either a good pair of running shoes or simply a jumping rope! It weights nothing, can do in your carry on if you are travelling light and is an amazing calorie burning activity! Do that 5 minutes daily, it feels amazing!

Track your progress

Write down your daily workouts you come up with or find on the internet. And your goal is to be better today than you were yesterday. If you don’t think like that, you will lose motivation and keep saying “I will workout tomorrow” … no that is NOT okay, no matter what, give yourself a minimum of 15 minutes a day. By noting down your workouts and progress, you will keep yourself motivated and become a pro at being healthier than you were while travelling!

Stay Active

The last but not the least, stay active by adopting the active travel method like we do. When you go to a new city, look for adrenaline rush activities. Say yes to hikes. Say yes to biking tours! We love to travel for sport and adventure and this keeps us active daily. There are so many fun things to do around the world like the Great wall of china trek or Marathon, Angkor Wat Run, Death Road biking, so many things you can do and we can’t wait to show you many other Active Travel activities you can do around the world! Make sure to follow our Stay Active section to keep track of these activities.
