Dolphin Sightseeing Boat Trip In Musandam Oman

Oman is a gem. From Dubai you can drive a few hours to reach Musandam, where you will reach Khasab via a breathtaking ride by the coast of the Gulf of Oman. It is commonly known for travelers to drive the Californian Coast and the Australian Coast, but this Omani Coast is definitely a path worth doing once in a lifetime.

On the way to the border – En route vers les douanes!

Driving (conservatively) to the border takes around 2 hours.
At the border, you will have to park your car and go inside to process.

What you need to pass the boarder from Dubai to Oman:

  • Your car registration papers
  • Your car insurance (that your car is insured in Oman), or¬†registration card¬†(Mulkiya)
  • Your passport

Fees Dubai to Oman (info updated for 30/10/2015):

  • One fee for the car to exit the UAE
  • An approximate fee of 35 DHR per passenger in the car
  • For 5 people in one car, it cost us a total of 177 DHR for an approximate of 35 per person as an exit fee by car in the UAE. Note that we held Australian, French, Canadian and Ukrainian passports and we can’t confirm you if it is the case for everyone or just for non-GCC nationals.

Same once you’ve passed the border for the Omani Check-in point, you will have to get out to process your visa, to then meet a check-up point with the local police. They don’t always check your car, but it does happen.

Needs & Fees to enter Oman

  • Visa fee of 50 DHR
  • Car registration
  • Car insurance
  • Passport, duh!

From there, it took us an hour an a half to reach Khasab‘s port, where we took our boat. Most visitors book a¬†9am-4pm trip, but in our case, we stayed over night and had the boat for 24 hours.

Driving to Oman sight

It was our first boat trip and we were very excited to spend the night sleeping on the boat enjoying the bright stars. During the journey, the boat brings you around the fjords of Musandam. They are huge chunks of rocks towering over the serene waters and little villages that are only accessible by boat. The wildlife is abundant in the waters along the coast and so there is no surprise that Scuba Diving is one of the main and most popular tourist activities in this region. In the list are dolphins, clownfish, turtles, whale sharks, sailfish, reef sharks, manta rays, devil raysand, pelagic sharks, barracuda, trevally, jacks, and if you are luck you will find a shy sea horse. The boat has snorkelling equipment, so you are covered!

The boat stopped several times so we can enjoy the waters, jump off the boat and go snorkelling. The water is crystal-clear, warm and full of beautiful fishes & coral. Beware of sea urchins there are tons at some places!

For dinner, there was a small barbecue on the boat, on which the guys cooked for us some¬†fresh fish to eat with biryani, hummus & pitas, chicken, veggies and curry. We had the same thing for lunch the next day, without the fish, and to be honest we didn’t really care as we had such a good time. For breakfast they had boiled eggs, fruits, coffee, toasts with jam, cream cheese and a huge Nutella jar. Need no further, they even had instant coffee for us (those 3 in 1 mix).

Chasing the dolphins was very fun, as we were all trying to spot them and sail beside them. At times, the dolphins really love to play by chasing the boats. We were lucky enough to have amazing shots and sights of these beautiful animals.

The crew partied until 2 am, but Mitch & I were so exhausted from our work week that we passed out around 10 pm. I woke up at some point to photograph the beautiful scenery as the moon was so bright. At night our fellow friends went for several night swims and could also witness lighting plankton. Next time I will have to go for it!

We both woke up very early for the sunrise and I jumped in the water before 6 am. What a warm and beautiful way to witness the sunrise with the serene silence of nature.

I will stop here. Watch our vlog and it should be enough to convince you to go into this journey!

Bon voyage!

While living in Dubai for a year, I heard so much about oman as well! I have never visit Oman but its on my wishlist for Sure! Xx

  • Kevin Wagar

Sounds like a really wonderful experience! It’s a shame you missed the midnight swim with the glowing plankton. Love the Habs shirt!

  • I love how the boats have all those pillows for lounging. How fun to relax, eat, and enjoy the gorgeous views and then be able to jump into the waters at any time. That’s the epitome of lounging for me!!

  • This looks so fun and exciting! I’m kind of REALLY in love with the photo of you sitting and eating because the mountains in the background looks breathtaking! I clearly need to go to Oman.

  • Ivy

OMG I saw this on someone’s Instagram and wanted to find out more about it- so glad you wrote this post! I didn’t even know you could snorkel in Oman up until last week, and the abundance of marine life there is. So how what is the sleeping situation like? I’m a little confused- did everyone just pile on the pillows on the deck?

  • This is such a great informational post. I love posts that list out exactly what I need, how much I’ll pay, and also photos of the experience I’ll have. Thanks for sharing. Bookmarking this one for sure.

  • That looks SO fun and amazing… but confused about the sleeping. So, did you sleep on that boat pictured? With the sides all open? And the partying was like right there while you passed out at 10:00 or were there rooms somewhere that you slept? Looks fun in any case.

  • I love the idea of sleeping outdoors like that but is it always so busy? OMan is truly awesome though. I went there for my honeymoon and stayed on the Musandem peninsula. I would highly recommend it.

  • Nicki McLaren

Those Dhow boats look amazing! I love the pillows and blankets – the ones I was on in Dubai had chairs. Regretting I didn’t make it here when I was in Dubai – I shall have to go back <3

  • I have been DYING to go to Oman. I keep seeing all these amazing photos and your post and video is no exception – it’s making me want to go more. So cool that you drove from the UAE – looks like stunning scenery along the way.

  • Laura Nalin

This is an awesome guide! I love the tone of your photographs and how detailed you are in the post. It’s super helpful for anyone who’s en route to a similar adventure. I gotta get myself over there! Man, even the throw pillows on the boat are colorful and patterned!

  • Like it! We’re about to go to Musandam Peninsula! Do I have to ask for a specific permission when I rent the car?

  • Love30

It looks like you guys had so much fun! I would definitely check out this trip ūüėĄ Ree love30
